Although I only visited for...A real culture shock. Although I only visited for a very short time (a one-day tour from a Mediterranean cruise liner), the city of Cairo had a similar effect on me. The contrast of wide boulevards by the Nile with beautiful buildings, side-by-side with the poor areas with ramshackle buildings, dilapidated tenement buildings, bullock carts, scruffy street traders and beggars, including dirty undernourished street children.
