A Story to Tell

Welcome to our new member of HWH - Margaret Mayo.

Despite the fact that I’ve been writing romance for almost forty years I feel like a new kid on the block. I regularly read Heroines with Hearts and was delighted when asked if I’d like to join this elite group. I’ve always wondered who came up with the title Heroines with Hearts because it so perfectly encapsulates what writing romance is all about.

I used to read romance long before I began to write and when I had a story pop into my head one day way back in the seventies and eventually had it accepted it was a dream come true. Not that it was an easy ride, it took many re-writes before I had the ‘perfect’ novel, and I’m saying that with tongue in cheek because perfection is always the goal but not always the end result. Not in the eyes of the writer anyway.

What better time could it be to become a member of Heroines With Hearts than at the beginning of a new year? One which I hope will be happy and successful for everyone. I am starting 2015 writing a new story – one which is not even plotted yet but is in my head. I always start with a situation between my main characters and take it from there. I might know one or two things that I want to happen along the way but that is all. Therefore I find it as exciting g to write a book as it is to read one.

Next time I’ll tell you all about my very first book which was published in 1976 and made me the happiest woman alive. It was such a thrill to be accepted. I grabbed hold of my husband and we danced around the room and the kids thought we were mad.

Happy Days!

  7. Margaret,

It's so nice to have you as a part of Heroines with Hearts.

It sounds like we have similar writing styles. I start with the germ of an idea and generally don't plot anything out except a few points before I get started. And it's rare if I write those points down. Usually they just percolate around in my head. It's always fun to see where my stories and characters take me! :)

    1. That's interesting, Debra. I thought nearly all writers plotted beforehand. It's good to know I'm not on my own. Like you say, it's fun to see where the characters take you.
