Sherry Gloag tells us about her favourite season

Please give a warm welcome to today's Friday Friend, Sherry Gloag.

Multi-published author Sherry is a transplanted Scot now living in the beautiful coastal countryside of Norfolk, England. She considers the surrounding countryside as extension of her own garden, to which she escapes when she needs "thinking time" and solitude to work out the plots for her next novel. While out walking she enjoys talking to her characters, as long as there are no other walkers close by.

Apart from writing, Sherry enjoys gardening, walking, reading and cheerfully admits her books tend to take over most of the shelf and floor space in her workroom-cum-office. She also finds crystal craft work therapeutic.

Today, Sherry tells us about her favourite season.

What is your favourite time of year?

I love the promise of Spring. It’s a time when snowdrops pierce their way through frost and snow, and nod in the breeze as if to say, ‘Have faith, spring is coming.’ Then there are the crocuses. No longer do we have just the royal purple to grace our flower beds, but yellow and white, plus the yellow and brown stripy ones that the birds in my garden love to eat before they reach full bloom. So irritating. And yet… J

The birds themselves are another harbinger of spring. To begin with, the seasonal visitors arrive in a trickle that soon becomes a flood, which turns into an aerial ballet.

The trees slowly awaken from their winter sleep, and for a while you have a clear view of the birds as they perch on the branches watching the world go by while they assess the best places to build their nests.

A few days ago the UK was blanketed in a cloud of Saharan sand dust which, mixed with other commercial and industrial pollutants, made getting around fairly difficult for many people, but amazingly the trees, shrubs and flowers prospered.

In a space of forty-eight hours buds burst into leaf or flower, lanes were lined with the colour of tiny blossoms holding their faces up to the sky.

A blanket of soft green clothed the tree branches, and the birds flourished on the insects they found.

Wherever you look, whether it is in the garden, the country-side or even towns and cities, the arrival of spring is the harbinger of upcoming school breaks, holidays at home or away. Spring for me is filled with the promise of new beginnings far more so than January 1st. Every season holds a special element of delight, but for me, spring is the first of the four seasonal cycles.

My story Duty Calls is set in an English estate and while my heroine resents the reasons behind her tenancy there, she can’t help falling in love with her surroundings, and is delighted to have the opportunity for her daughter to grow up in such a beautiful setting.

My upcoming story, He’s My Husky, a light paranormal novella to be published by EsKape Press on April 22nd, is set in winter and uses the season as though it is another character.

What is your favourite season and why?

Duty Calls
Blurb
She’d saved his life…
Rafe Hawk refuses to accept the inheritance, of a large English estate, and the title that goes with it, after his birth father’s death because the man chose duty over the woman he loved and their son.
So when he finds himself temporarily living at Kinsale Hall, he’s not prepared to trust anyone associated with the place, including Trudi Delaney and her daughter.
So why, when he looks into their eyes, does he suddenly remember a woman who vanished without a trace after saving his life one stormy night ten years earlier?
Now he could destroy hers.
Instinct warns Trudi Delaney the arrival of the contemptuous American architect at Kinsale Hall will change her life forever. Especially when she discovers he spends so much of his time in areas of Kinsale Hall off-limits to visitors.
Eleven years after escaping from her psychotic husband with a stranger, she’s still plagued by nightmares of events she can’t remember. Events such as who fathered her beautiful daughter?
Now, more than a decade later, she is confronted by another stranger. Will this one destroy everything she holds dear?
Excerpt
“What are you doing here?”
“We have to talk.”
“I’ve nothing to say to you. Go away. I want to be alone.”
“Where are you going?” Cautiously, Rafe moved forward.
Did he assume that like the fawn, now vanished, she too might bolt away?
“It’s none of your business.” Emotionally drained and feeling too tired to talk, Trudi put her hand out to repel his advance. Why couldn’t he leave her alone? “Go away,” she repeated, without any real hope he’d listen.
With a sigh, she watched him approach and, as if in a dream, stared as his hand wrapped gently around the top of her arm before he guided her to a nearby fallen tree trunk.
“You have nothing to fear from me.” He sat at the other end of the trunk, putting some distance between them. “Did Vince tell you I’ve agreed to a DNA test?”
“I haven’t spoken to either Vince or Arthur since your sister arrived at the Hall.” No way would she admit, even to herself, how much she missed them.
“You should, you know.” His voice, pitched low and soft, curled round the coldness in her heart.
“You don’t know anything about it. Stay out of my affairs and go away.” Appalled by the sound of tears in her voice, Trudi turned her face away from him. The smell of crushed grass wafted on the warm air. Midges danced in the shafts of sunlight beaming to earth between the trees.
“That’s not possible. If Rachel is my daughter, do you expect me to turn my back on the result of the most wonderful night of lovemaking I’ve ever experienced? She’s a grand kid, and I’d want her to know I’m her Dad.”
“Lust, Rafe. Nothing more than lust. Admit it.”
“How can you be sure? Vince said you don’t remember what happened.”
“Oh, Vince told you, did he?” she spat at him. “How convenient! And I’m supposed to do what? Fall in line and believe what you say? Just like that? If that night was so memorable for you, how come you didn’t recognize me when you arrived?
“I’m tired of other people telling me what I can, and can’t do. I’m sick of being manipulated by people I trusted. And I particularly resent being told I’m a coward and brought it all on myself.”
“Don’t be silly. No one would think that.”
“No? You don’t know the half of it?” Tears forgotten, Trudi swung round and nearly collided with Rafe’s chest. “Not half-an-hour ago, someone decided to enlighten me. My brother considers I deserved everything that happened to me since I flouted his wishes and married Denny.”
“I don’t believe you.” Genuine shock filled his eyes.
“Believe! They accused me of carrying on like a self-centred, spoiled child who wouldn’t listen when Arthur tried to warn me away from Denny. And I still can’t manage my life without running to Arthur and Vince for help. I’m still relying on others to rescue me from the mess I’ve made of my life.”
Trudi watched the dull red stain sweep up Rafe’s neck and into his face. Though he may not have voiced those hurtful words, he clearly agreed with her sister-in-law’s opinion, which explained his attitude. How could he expect Trudi to share Rachel when he held her in contempt? It couldn’t work.

He's My Husky
Blurb
Since his birth, nine years ago, Emma’s dogs have taken on the roll of her son, Sam’s protectors – until six months ago. Now she’s becoming more anxious as each day passes, and doesn’t know why. She certainly didn’t expect Sam’s absentee father, Max, to solve the problem.
Excerpt
For the rest of the day Emma supported Sue by listening, while all the time keeping an eye on Max as he roamed from one room of her home to the next. When he stopped in front of the bank of photographs of their son Shane, on top of her book case, she held her breath. Father and son looked so alike no one would, or could mistake the family link if they saw the two of them together.
She also noted their other similarities. Shane’s stillness when he concentrated on something. As she watched Max now it dawned on her their concentration seemed almost animalistic at times.
It reminded her of the pointer dog, Queenie, she’d had as a child. Most of the time it had romped and played with her until without warning it would stand quite still staring at something beyond her vision. Nothing anyone did to divert Queenie would budge her until she’d satisfied herself her six-year-old charge was safe.
Now she acknowledged the same intensity in Max as he stared at the history of his son in the framed pictures.
Startled by Sue’s touch on her arm she spun round.
“I knew Shane reminded me of someone, but never realised who it was until he…” She pointed at Max. “… turned up this morning.” They both stared at the man still absorbed in the photographs.
“Didn’t he know?”
“He knew!”

Today's Friday Friend - Sherry Gloag

Please welcome today's Friday Friend, Sherry Gloag.

“There is a book in everyone.” True or false?

Probably a little bit of both. There probably is a book in each one of us but it’s the ‘getting it out there’ that makes the difference. Not just getting it out there, but getting it out there in a presentation that will catch the eye and attention span of the reader.

What is the point of slaving away for days, weeks, months even, if all you are going to offer your reader is a load of drivel?

That said (grin) every reader has their own preferred genre of reading so the rest may well seem like drivel to them however well it’s written.

A case of ‘horses for courses.’

So what to write? And how to go about getting it ‘out there’ in a state and condition that will entice that very particular and often elusive reader?

First you have to know what you want to write about. Well that’s simple enough, surely? Actually, no! What interests you may not be the best thing to write about.

I can almost hear you saying: “Duh? I thought you HAD to write about what you know?”

True, but what you know and what interests you, are not the same thing. Just take a moment to stop and think about it.

I am interested in gardening, I know enough to achieve what I want in my garden, but to write a book about gardening…, the experts would be laughing themselves silly if I attempted it! Oh! And the readers – if I had any – would be bored rigid within seconds!

So write about what you know then? Sure but don’t get so immersed that once again you bore your readers to death. It is tempting to include everything you know in your writing, but then you would be guilty – what is known in the trade- as ‘info dump.’

One of the best examples I’ve come across of threading technical knowledge into a story was done by Christine Flynn in her book Sugar House
It’s not a new book, but is one that will always be on my book shelf because when I get lost in how to present information in my books I refer back to her awesome skill.

In the Sugar House Christine Flynn uses her heroine to impart the intricate and technical knowledge she wants to share with her readers. She delivered it in the right bite sizes, and had me wanting to read on to learn more and kept me riveted to the plot that was woven around the technicalities of the background. In other words the background became another character in the book, and an essential character at that.

I write romance, contemporary romance with a smidgeon of suspense. I never tagged myself as a suspense writer and it came as a huge shock when review after review contained the words, ‘edge of your seat’, ‘packed with suspense’, ‘fast paced, if you blink you’ll miss the action…’

This brings me to research. If, as in Christine Flynn’s book you want to weave specific information through your book, your research must be spot on, because that information is no longer something you ‘dump’ on your reader, but becomes another character, you, the writer, use to move the plot along.

When I wrote From Now Until Forever, released by Astraea Press in December 2011, my heroine, Melanie Babcott used a dustbin lorry/trashcart to get her client (and husband) out of danger. I had to be sure, they were not going to be automatically crushed once tipped into the back of the lorry. A small, but essential detail!

It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist for you to realise I knew nothing about the construction of dustbin lorries!

As that and the next book, His Chosen Bride, are set in a riding school for disabled/physically challenged children, I had to research the procedures used when working with these children. It would have been so easy simply to copy and paste the information into one single paragraph, but I imagine I would also have lost my readers if I’d cheated on them in this way.

Nor did I know when I wrote it there would be three more stories in the Gasquet Princes Series. His Chosen Bride, released by Astraea Press http://www.astraeapress.com in time for 2012 Valentine’s Day, followed on From Now Until Forever because the hero’s eldest brother, Henri, made a very brief appearance in the book and later demanded his story be told. Books three and four are still in progress as I write, and like Henri they had a cameo part in His Chosen Bride and both decided they wanted their own stories told, and as they are twins…

So be careful when you write about ‘what you know’ and be sure you know what you are writing about.

From Now Until Forever
For Prince Liam, families meant bad news, unwanted commitments, and the loss of his personal freedom. Love spawned white picket fences, slippers at the hearth with a wife and kids making demands, so why did those images disappear when he met Melanie Babcot?
Melanie Babcot fought hard to escape the horrors of her youth and vowed to remain single and free, so when paid to protect Prince Liam from insurgents why did her personal pledge fly out the window?

Excerpt:

Liam Fitzwilliam Gasquet stared in amazement at the blooming patch of red milliseconds before the pain exploded in his arm. Some trigger-happy idiot had fired in his direction. Indignation didn’t have time to take root before another bullet kicked the dust at his feet.
Not ‘trigger-happy’.
Intentional.
The rebels had found the fourth and youngest son of Jean-Phillipe Gasquet, ruler of the tiny kingdom adjacent to the Swiss border. When had they discovered his whereabouts?
With a reluctant sigh, he faced the truth of it. They hadn’t ‘found’ him at all. They’d followed him.

His Chosen Bride
Prince Henri Gasquet is happy to let his father, the king, choose his bride for him until he meets Monica Latimer.
Monica Latimer is not prepared to risk letting any man close enough to learn about her Gift. A gift that normally has men running for the hills when they find out about it.

Excerpt:

She lost track of time until the flames caught her attention once more. They flickered from orange to gold, to silver, to white.
A flurry of snowflakes masked the flames and for a second Monica watched the most beautiful, pristine snow-scene she’d ever seen. Her lips curved in longing. How she’d love to get a toboggan and slide down that slope. She knew where it was, and had done just that many times in her childhood, first with her parents and then, in clandestine manner, with her brother. Sneaking an old tin tray from the back of her mother’s walk-in pantry, she’d then grabbed Billy’s hand and they’d rushed out the back gate, heading for the lakeside track that led up into the hills.
Darkness, dense and thick with grief dropped over the scene. Startled and disconcerted by the strength of emotion emanating from the vision Monica shifted to her knees, ready to stand, when a voice, a deep male voice, sharp with fear called out her name.
“Monica!”
She knew she’d never heard the voice before, and yet—it was as familiar to her as the image she saw in her mirror each morning.
“Help me, Monica.”
Desperate for more clues, she searched the darkness within the flames until it sputtered and faded. With a curse she jumped up and ran for the phone. With her outstretched hand hovering over it she halted and let her hand drop to her side once more. What could she say? What would the police or rescue team think of her if she called them and told them she’d seen a vision of a man in distress.
They’d laugh in her face and classify her as a lunatic. Well, maybe not. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d contacted them with positive information but something—an instinctive gut reaction told her what she’d seen this time hadn’t happened yet.

Welcome to Sherry Gloag

Welcome to today’s Friday Friend, Sherry Gloag. Sherry writes stories that go right to 'The Heart of Romance'. First she introduces herself:

"Why don't you try writing a book?" The oft-asked question hit the air again.
"Who would read it if I did?" I asked my innocent looking husband. He'd learned my secret many years ago, and sporadically 'poked' at my lack of self belief.
"You won't know until you try!" He dropped his bait into the air between us, and for some reason, a few years ago now, I decided to bite.
And am I glad I did?
Not only do I enjoy meeting the characters who demand their stories are told, I have also met and made many wonderful friends, both on line and elsewhere, in the process.
One day my work-in-progress stalled over a stubborn scene that refused to come right, so in frustration I tried turning it into a stand-alone short story in an attempt to find the flaws.
That scene eventually honed down satisfactorily, but left me with an insatiable desire to venture into the world of short story writing.
How could I know, at the time, that the truculent scene would send me off on a new and exciting writing path?
I wrote my first stand-alone short story in July 2009 which, with several others, is now published in LASR
More recently I have discovered the challenging world of reviewing.
For as long as I can remember I've read romances, and am proud to be part of the 48% of readers who enjoy romances.
My first attempt at writing one, was confiscated by my teacher when they realised I was ignoring my homework for my 'great masterpiece'! Sadly I never saw it again! And so my teacher saved the great reading population from what was surely a great master-disaster.
Now I'm back... and delighted with the growing success of my short stories, and jubilant about the release of my debut novel The Brat in October 2010 with The Wild Rose Press.

2011 opens with the release of my sixth short story, Hogmanay, at LASR, and the release, on February 11th, of my second novel, Duty Calls. Also my first venture into a 'longer-short-story of approximately 12k words, The Wrong Target, which is part of the 'Cupid Goes Wild' anthology, released by eTreasures comes out in early February.

Sherry now introduces a new topic to Heroines with Hearts – book trailers:

Businesses rely on them. We are bombarded by them, all the time. What am I talking about?
Advertisements. Television advertisements in particular.
We may claim to dislike them and to ignore them, but they seep into our subliminal consciousness and the more we are bombarded by them, the deeper the message becomes embedded.
For a moment, stop and consider the number of websites you visit that have advertisements inserted in/on them. Almost all of them contain movement. Movement that is out to attract your attention. You could call those advertisements ‘trailer-ads’.
They work! They bring in the customers. If they didn’t companies wouldn’t spend millions on a thirty to sixty second message intended to part us from our cash.
Here in the UK we used to endure three breaks in each hour of TV viewing, now we get four. That’s an extra three hours advertising revenue in every twenty-four. That is also a great deal of commercial money shelled out to grab the viewers’ attention.
So why am I banging on about it?
If it is such a sure-fire way of grabbing customer attention why not consider using the same tactic for advertising your book?
Book trailer videos are becoming more popular and are not that difficult to create, depending on what you want. If you are not sure, do not despair, all you have to do is Google ‘How to create a Book Trailer video’ and you will find pages of instructions to follow.
It becomes a matter of which tutorial you want to follow. And away you go. It took me a while to get the hang of the basics, but once I had them I enjoyed myself. I don’t aspire to creating a complex video, and believe me, there are some awesome book trailers out there.
If this is a promotion tool you’ve never tried but would like to, then put ‘book trailers into the YouTube search and see what comes up.
Study several and work out what it is you like about your favourites. Make notes, about timing, colour synchronicity, content, both visual and textual.
Go back to your own book and work out ten headliner sentences that describe your book and go searching in the multitude of sites that offer photograph or video clips that suit.
When you complete your masterpiece and upload it to YouTube you can then take it up another level and enter your video in one of the many book trailer competitions out there. It is an amazing way to get free publicity for both your trailer and of course, your book.
The book trailer I entered in a competition received over one thousand hits in the thirty days of the competition.
And all this is free.
Free publicity, free promotion. Creating enormous potential for increased book sales!
Most PCs provide Movi-making software, and there are plenty to download for free if you want something else.
And if you want a book trailer but don’t have the time or inclination to create one yourself, you will find several sites happy to offer their services to you.
Since October 2010 I have enjoyed three book releases and created videos for all of them.
From the first, I learned a video over one and a half minutes is considered too long.
So the next challenge was to create about ten sentences for each of my novels that guaranteed to grab the readers’ attention and persuade them to buy my books.
Would they entice you?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smB8gnUSHak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7U6jOH9DiA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM19_O6podE
If not, study them and decide why not, and then when you sit down to create your own video, you will have learned what NOT to include.
This is an awesome, free promo tool for selling your book, and one well worth adding to your ever increasing arsenal of promotions tools.

Thank you very much for having me here today.

Thanks for being with us, Sherry.  We wish you every success with your books and with your future writing c career.

Sherry’s second novel, Duty Calls, was released in February 2011.

Excerpt:
“Stop the car!” Rafe Hawk swung round to face the driver. “I recognise this road. You never said the commission to build those retirement units was at Kinsale Hall. You know damn well I swore never set foot in the place again, eleven years ago.”

Rage hazed his vision. “You knew I’d refuse the commission if you’d revealed the location, and because you withheld that vital information, Arthur, this contract is null and void.” He shot forward in his seat when Arthur tramped on the brakes.

His friend from their Uni days skewed round in his seat. “How long have we known each other?”

Startled by Arthur Clifton’s question, Rafe hesitated. “What’s the length of our friendship got to do with anything? Other than the fact you’re stretching it very thin, if you think I’ll set foot on Kinsale territory again.” He swung open the car door and leaped out, his fingers tunnelling through his windswept hair.

Brilliant blue skies overhead offered a large playground for the early summer sunshine, and the fluffy white clouds sailing by. He saw the high chimney-tops through the trees.

“Do you really think I’d bring you here without a very good reason?” Arthur remained in his seat, his hands on the steering wheel, watching Rafe pace up and down the soft verge beside the open-topped car.

"I can't think of a single reason good enough that justifies you resurrecting events that nearly cost me my life, and possibly cost the life on an unknown woman."
