Saturday Snippet: The Seduction of Esther

An excerpt from Jennifer's contemporary romance...

The Seduction of Esther is on sale this month for $0.99.

“Hello, Zoe!” Samara pulled away from the Rabbi and the other woman, grinned and put her arm out and hugged Zoe, who raced up and hugged her back.
“I want you to meet my Daddy. I told him all about you and how great you sing and here he is!”
Samara looked up, her face open, eyes wide with happiness. Nathaniel met her eyes and for a moment, everything was fine. Fine, until recognition turned her brown eyes to cognac and her face to rose. Fine, until her hand shook and spilled her red wine down the front of his light blue shirt and burgundy tie.
He jumped back. This was the woman he remembered.
“I’m so sorry,” she gasped as she grabbed a bunch of napkins and blotted the front of his shirt. The heat of his body permeated the fabric and warmed her fingers. As she stood this close to him, the scent of his aftershave—a rich, masculine smell she couldn’t yet identify—enveloped her. The typical chatter of the congregation after services faded and she kept her gaze lowered, sure if she looked up, all eyes in the room would be focused on her. Her friend Rachel, who’d been talking to her moments before Zoe and her dad approached, had melted into the throngs of people. Even the Rabbi had disappeared. Was he off talking to someone else, or just staring at her in disapproval, waiting for her to make more of a spectacle of herself? Her face heated and her feet itched to escape. Silence surrounded her like a cloak and she tried not to gasp for air. As the wine soaked through the napkins in her hands, she reached for more. In her haste, she knocked into a plate of cookies and sent them tumbling to the floor.
“It’s okay.” His quiet voice was meant to give reassurance. It should have. But the rich timbre sent chills down her spine and her stomach flopped. The man from the grocery store. The one who’d watched her make a fool of herself. Maybe he wouldn’t remember her. Please God.

“No, it’s not.” She thrust the napkins into his hands and bent to clean up the cookies. Her hip hit the edge of the table and it rocked. She dropped her head in shame. Could this possibly get any worse? One glance up and she had her answer. As she suspected, the whole room stared at her, the silence thick, like cotton wool. She took a deep breath, and another. Rachel approached with extra napkins and Samara pleaded with her wordlessly for help. She had to get away before he realized who she was.

Sunday Snippet From The Seduction of Esther, by Jennifer Wilck

Below is an excerpt from The Seduction of Esther, on sale for $0.99 the entire month of August on Amazon. The scene is from the heroine's POV. Samara has just met our hero's, Nathaniel's, ex-wife and is devastated. Josh, who is secretly in love with Samara, is trying to comfort her:

The masculine hand splayed across the small of the back like a brand. She could almost smell the smoke and hear the sizzle as it imprinted itself on the black coat. Light hair on square fingers burned themselves into her brain. She knew the feel of that hand, the rough drag of skin as his thumb had swirled against the inside of her wrist. Her hand tingled at the memory and she clasped it around her waist as she watched the hand, and the man it belonged to, move farther away with the woman. Samara shivered.
“Are you cold?” Josh asked and concern creased his forehead.
“I’m fine,” she mumbled, unable to tear her glance away from them. She stared at them until they turned the corner, listened for their footsteps, waited for him to return to her, but he didn’t.
In the space of five minutes—had it only been five minutes—her world had changed. She’d been having a conversation with Josh. She didn’t even remember what the conversation was about. Her forehead crinkled. Oh, yeah, the Purim spiel. She’d heard Zoe’s chatter before she saw her, before the little hand had pulled at her arm. She remembered smiling at Zoe; now, she couldn’t imagine smiling again. Just the thought of stretching her cheek muscles made the skin hurt, as if it were already cracked. Zoe’s words echoed in her brain. “This is my mom, this is my mom, this is my mom.”

Four such simple words, yet they’d been the beginning of the end. She’d looked up with interest, had introduced everyone with courtesy and had quelled her curiosity. Although very little had been said, and Shelley had been pleasant, Samara’s stomach had developed a knot the size of a grapefruit. The three of them together had looked complete, like a family. Nathaniel had been distant, aloof. Gone was the warmth she’d experienced with him before. His look that said she was his had disappeared. The icy chill had started. She fought to concentrate so she could continue talking and smiling. His hand on Shelley’s back had cemented the feeling. So much for asking him out. How could she think Nathaniel and she could be together, when it was so obvious this threesome was a unit? Sure, she was a great diversion, but there was no way she could compete with the mother of his child. And what right did she have to even try?

J is for Just Re-Released

Jennifer's book is out!

I’m happy to announce that Skin Deep, my contemporary romance originally published by Whiskey Creek Press in 2011, has been re-released by Rebel Ink Press.

With a tighter storyline and a brand new cover that better reflects the grittiness of the story, it’s currently available as an e-book, but will be released in paperback shortly.

Here’s the blurb:

The last thing Valerie needs, after escaping an abusive marriage to an alcoholic and rebuilding her life, is a broody, secretive, standoffish man. But that’s exactly what she gets when she becomes a makeup artist on the set of a hit sitcom and draws the attention of the series’ star.
John Samuels hides a terrible past—a life of abuse and neglect. A successful acting career and the affection and support of cast, crew and friends, does nothing to convince him that he is anything other than an unlovable monster.
Will he learn that the life he’s been living has been built on a lie or will he be doomed to repeat the sins of his father?

And here’s an excerpt:

That night, after all the scenes had been shot, Valerie waited for everyone to leave. She didn’t want to answer questions or receive pity.
She arranged and rearranged drawers and tools. The trailer contained three stations, each with its own make-up chair. A long table ran down one wall, with plenty of drawers for storage space. Well-lit mirrors hung above the table. Unable to find anything else to do, and convinced by the silence that everyone had to have left, she took out her keys to lock up. She jumped as a knock sounded at the door, the trailer rattled, and a head peeked in.
“Valerie?”
“Oh, hi, John.” She expelled a deep breath and willed her heart to slow its frantic beat. “Do you need something?”
“No.” He entered and stood by the door. John Samuels played the lead. At almost six foot three, he dwarfed the trailer and had to tip his head to fit. He folded his muscular arms across his chest and spread his feet apart. “Michelle told me you were not joining us tonight. I thought I would see if I could change your mind.”
Valerie rolled her eyes. “She is persistent.”
“You noticed.” John’s dark eyes twinkled. His mouth widened with a ghost of a smile. Valerie tried not to gasp.
He reminded her of a rugged cowboy—broad shouldered, with a prominent brow, dark piercing eyes, high cheekbones, and a cleft chin. When he smiled, even a slight trace of one, his eyes looked like liquid velvet and his dimples twinkled like stars in the night sky. A five-o’clock shadow covered his cheeks. Her fingers itched to brush against their rough texture, to tease his mouth into a full-blown grin.
“So, what can I say to make you join us?”
As he leaned against the wall in well-fitting jeans and a T-shirt that left nothing to the imagination, Valerie’s mind said, “Sleep with me.” Heat crept up her neck, over her cheeks, and continued to the roots of her hair. A thin sheen of sweat dampened the space between her breasts. She felt the sudden urge to fan herself, like a damsel in distress in an old B-movie. Instead, she ignored her traitorous thoughts. Her balled fist pressed into her tight stomach.
“Tonight, not even chocolate will change my mind.”
She didn’t exactly lie. She had no intention of going to the bar, or of sleeping with him, no matter how her thoughts might try to sabotage her good intentions. She’d been fooled by surface finery before, and it had almost killed her. She wouldn’t let it happen again.
“I will remember that,” he promised. “But next time you will not get off so easy.” His eyes bored into hers for a moment, and then he turned on his heel and left.
* * * *
True to his word, John arrived the following day prepared for battle. With a cursory knock on the door, he dangled a bag of M&Ms inside the trailer, but snatched it back before she could grab them. “We are going out for pizza. I will pick you up in ten minutes.” Before she could answer, he walked out.
Valerie shrugged as she finished her work. The new Valerie never allowed other people to make decisions for her, but she’d practically handed John a permission slip. And, he had M&M’s. How could she refuse?
Ten minutes later, he returned, ushered her out the door and down the steps. Although he didn’t touch her, she could imagine the warmth of his hand on the small of her back, and feel the gentle puff of his breath against her hair. The angle of his body steered her toward the others in the parking lot as if he had taken her by the hand and dragged her with him. An invisible electric charge pulled her. Or maybe it was his Dial-soap scent. That scent—soap and man—made her stomach flip flop. Her uncontrollable reaction to him disturbed her, especially since he appeared unaffected.
He remained silent, strode toward their meeting place, and studied his surroundings as if he expected someone to pop out of the shadows and yell, “Boo!”
Then she saw the brown bag of M&Ms sticking out of his white shirt pocket. Before he could stop her, she reached around and grabbed them, opened the bag and popped three in her mouth.
“Hey, those are mine!” He reached for the bag, but not fast enough to retrieve them.
“Not anymore.” As she danced away from him, she stuck another handful in her mouth.
He brought his hand up to his heart, as if she had wounded him deeply, but the twinkle in his eye gave him away. Valerie had all she could do not to burst out laughing.
“You did not have to take them, you know. I was planning to give them to you later.” He pouted and his dark hair fell across his brow, but not before Valerie saw a flash of a smile turn the corners of his mouth up.
“Oh really? When?”
“After dinner, of course. I would not want to spoil your appetite.”

Once Ana started reading Rescue Me, she could not stop.

Thank you for having me today at Heroines with Hearts. Bear with me today as my responses could be a little slow. I am traveling to a writer's retreat that I’m partaking in this weekend. I’d like to share my brief journey to publication and then about my newest release Rescue Me.
The first book I ever wrote is on a back shelf waiting to see the light of day. About 11 years into my writing career, I started researching agents and built a list of those I would like to represent me. Once I felt confident my book was ready for representation, I submitted queries to the agents on my list. The rejections flowed into my email inbox. After multiple times multiple rejections from agents, I decided to submit to electronic publishers and made forward progress. Two steps forward and then the rejection arrived.
About to give up, I was given a lead to two more electronic publishers. I was firmly told to submit to them. So, I sent my submissions to the two publishers and waited for a response. On an early October day I received feedback from both publishers. The first email came in the morning and it was a rejection. Later that afternoon, my family was gathered in the living room and I checked my phone for messages. There was the e-mail from the other publisher. After hemming and hawing over whether to open it on my phone or go downstairs and sit in my office at my computer to cry over the rejection, I decided read it on my phone. Opening the e-mail my mouth dropped open, closed as I continued to read, and with tears in my eyes I screamed, “I sold my book.”

Florida Heat was released in July 2012 and Rescue Me was in the process of being written and edited. I decided to submit Rescue Me to my publisher when it was ready for submission. I wasn’t interested in trying to get an agent and that’s why I went back to my publisher. I thought it would be easier the second time around. After having gotten all those rejections and having a publisher but it wasn’t. I still worried that they would reject me. That they would reject my story. To my delight, they offered me a contract.
Are you wondering how I came up with the idea for this book? Well, if you ask any writer how they come up with ideas for their stories you will get a variety of answers. But in general, every writer will have similar answers. A line in a song stuck out in their head, something overheard in a conversation in a crowded elevator, something they see on the side of the street and the list goes on.
For me, Rescue Me stems from a visit to a family member’s old farm house. Although the city I named in the book is fictitious, I based it very loosely on the city where the family farm is location. It was after I started writing the beginning of the story that I shared the basis of this book with my second cousin, who grew up on the farm, and he told me a little history that shocked me. What I wrote, actually happened to my distant relatives! What am I talking about? The real farm was won on a poker bet.
It only takes a sliver of information or to see a miniscule detail on the side of the road to spark an idea. To make you wonder, what is the story behind that? So, be careful of what you say and do because it may end up in a book someday.
What tidbit of your life would you be willing to put in a book? Are there any taboo parts of your life to be written about? If yes, you don’t have to explain but it would be interesting to see how many of us have taboo parts in our life.

Ana's Review of Rescue Me:

In additional to her Twin Cities veterinary practice, Catherine Mornelli takes in stray animals as Four Hooves and Paws Rescue. The land where she houses her rescue horses has been put up for sale. Pragmatically, she decides to see her favorite great-aunt Elaine’s barn is serviceable.
Up north, Aunt Elaine’s 200 acres abuts Catherine’s old boyfriend’s farm. Josef has become a successful farmer and rents Elaine’s fields. Josef dotes on Aunt Elaine, but he is secretly hoping the sweet old lady will bequeath her land back to him. You see, his great-grandfather lost the land to Catherine’s great-grandfather in a poker game.
And dear Aunt Elaine has a scheme of her own: to get Catherine and Josef to marry.
With this setup, Jody Vitek creates an enthralling story with a host of supporting characters and perfectly timed plot twists. The priest who tries to block Josef’s and Catherine’s “shotgun” wedding so Aunt Elaine’s trust money will go to the church. The tornado that destroys Aunt Elaine’s barn along with Catherine’s dream for her rescue service. The dilemma after one night of passion.
Ms. Vitek writes with vivid imagery and graceful phrasing.  I recommend it wholeheartedly.
