I'm not sure where I get my names from.
I know I have a couple story ideas written down and the names of my characters are filled in with question marks.
Once I start getting into the plot, I'll think of what they look like, act like, and then come up with a letter for a name. Then if nothing comes to mind, I'll look in my book of names under that letter and find something.
I don't have any books of names, just use the internet sites of baby names or Scottish names or Irish name etc etc. Maybe it's a sign of the times that you don't need actual books any more, at least not for reference.
ReplyDeleteDo you find yourself remembering kids from grade school? If you liked them, you like their name and vice versa?
ReplyDeleteNot really. I know other people have said they don't like a name because it reminded them of someone they didn't like, but it doesn't affect me like that. There are very few people I actually dislike (intensely!). One was called Robert, but I can think of other Roberts that I like, so no problem.
ReplyDeleteBTW when I was a kid, I ALWAYS wanted to be called Anne - I gave that name to my favourite walkie-talkie doll back in the 50's!
Nope, don't go by kids I knew back in school.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the name MaKayla and of course it's the name of my heroine in The Patriot Girl. As for my hero, Dustin, I went by a "southern name" since it's set in TN.
Aw, when I was student teaching, one of my favorite kids was named Dustin. I love that name! Nowadays I try not to name characters after students who annoyed me too much! Don't need those reminders...LOL
