V is for Vampire

One of my favorite types of heroes is a vampire. I know most of my fellow blog authors don't agree! But that's the fabulous thing about the romance genre. There are so many sub-genres, there's something for everyone.

But back to vampires. I love vampires. I always have, even before they became as popular as they are now. Linda Lael Miller has a fabulous vampire trilogy. And I will be the first to admit that I am one of those middle-aged women who are in love with Stephenie Meyer's Edward. Having the oh-so-charming Rob Pattinson play him in the movies is an added bonus.

And then there's the Sookie Stackhouse series. For me, it's Eric Northman all the way. I'll take him over vampire Bill any day, er night. This carries over into "True Blood", the HBO adaptation of the books. Just when I thought Eric couldn't get any yummier, along comes Alexander Skarsgard.

Logically, it doesn't make sense for a vampire to be a desirable hero. They're technically dead, yet practically immortal (Which kind of wrecks the whole growing old together thing). They're blood thirsty. And they're dangerous. Instinct would have us running from them, rather than into their arms.

Yet, vampires are sexy. Maybe it's the danger that makes them that way. Many are torn and conflicted about the life they live, so we see a little bit of the redeemable side to them. They are passionate. When their silent hearts come 'alive' with love for the heroine, it's truly a romantic moment.

Whether the traditional vampire who only wakes up at night, or the new breed of vampire who sparkles in the sunlight, there's just something about them. Something, for me, that's appealing.

Until next time,

Happy Reading!

  1. Debra, I love the True Blood series on HBO and I read all the Twilight books (because my 9 year old wanted to read them and I needed to preview them first--ultimately, it was a no for her, but I thought they were great). They're not my typical go-to books, but the ones I've seen or read so far have been great. I think maybe the undead dilemma provides a depth that others don't have? Funny story--my dad watches True Blood, so he decided he wanted to read a vampire book. He went into the store, looked down at a table and happened to see a vampire book. So he bought it. He read it, couldn't get through it and gave it to me. I took one look at the cover and burst into laughter--it was some cartoon looking cover with a female vampire in some sort of ripped bodice dress. Out of all the vampire books he could have found (he didn't even know there are whole vampire sections in the bookstore) THIS is what he picked. So I went to the bookstore and bought him a vampire/Abraham Lincoln book that I think they're making into a movie.

  2. Jennier, That is so funny about your dad. (I have to say I can't even IMAGINE either of my parents watching that show!) I hear the Abraham Lincoln one is good...the movie comes out fairly soon...I'll have to read the book first.

  3. As you know already, Debra, I'm not a vampire lover at all. I'll admit I can't find anything sexy or lovable about dead, blood-suckers. Definitely not for me!

  4. Debra, do you watch the show, Being Human? My husband does; I lurk. Vampires, ghosts and other things I'm not sure about. You might like it.

And yes, it was funny about my dad, because he's NOT a romance reader and the cover screamed that (actually, it kind of screamed porn, but...). He's way too conservative for that. So now we just add it to the list of things to make fun of him for.

  5. Paula, I definitely know vampires aren't your thing! Isn't that the beauty of our genre?...there's something for everyone.

Jennifer...Oooh, I might have to check out that show. Dads sure to often provide great fodder for amusement, don't they?!

  6. I have a confession to make: I've always had something for Robert Pattinson when he appeared as Edward. Nice post.

  7. What about Brad Pitt in the vampire film. (Can't recall the name. Just drove for 6 hours and set up for a craft show. Semi-brain dead.)
I just saw a young Stephen Moyer in Quill. He was gorgeous, and still is.
