"Toast of Clifton".

A King defeated in battle, old friends and one-time mistress are called upon to enact treachery against the state to save his royal hide.

I couldn't resist the pic because King Charles II (in the novel) existed. The image smacks of brooding male, one who has had his fair share of mistresses and sired umpteen illegitimate childen and pondering which of several women might be next in line for his favours. ;)

  2. He was quite a lively fellow where the ladies are concerned, must have had a lot of charm.

Sounds like a good story, Francine.

  3. Sounds great - even though the Merrie Monarch was more of a rake than a king!

  4. Hi,

Hee hee, 1600 - 1700s so my favourite period of history. What with swashbuckling rakes, highwaymen, and pirate captains! Yee gods "real" alpha males, and some damn strong women around too, and yet we 21st century women think we're the ones who've achieved equality.

Let's be honest Charles II was old before his years in experience of life, a soldier at 13yrs, Commander in Chief West Country Forces by age 15. Crowned King of Scotland by around 18/20 yrs, and his attempt to take the English throne thwarted. By age 30 when asked to return as king he was airing mid-life crisis: wild oats already sown, and he kept bad company with Lord Rochester's rake cronies. But hey, what a life. ;)
