Tremble and Quake

No, not an earthquake. It's my knees when I have to:
1. Act onstage.
2. Sing.
3. Enter a room full of strangers.
4. Listen to a recording of my voice.
5. Make a marketing cold call.
6. Start a lawnmower.
7. Go shopping for dresses.
8. Wait for an agent or publisher to respond.

  1. LOL "Start a lawnmower." That one cracked me up... I totally get that, though!!

    In Which We Start Anew

  2. I've done some acting in my time, but preferred the directing role!
I've also listened to my voice (including a BBC recording which is online somewhere).
But starting a lawnmower is a new one on me! I'm wondering why that scares you.
Waiting for an agent or publisher to reply is one thing. Seeing an email response from the publisher sitting in your inbox and plucking up the courage to open it is the real scary part!

  3. I don't mind my voice, but I always think it sounds so different than the way I hear it. I guess that's the way it is for most folks.

Paula, I couldn't agree more...opening that e-mail is just terrifying.

Jo, I'm ashamed to say, I've never even tried to start a lawnmower.

  4. I've pulled and pulled on the starting string and the lawnmower hasn't started. Apparently, there was another bar I needed to hold shut so the machine knew I wanted it to start. Like I was yanking on it for fun...

  5. My mother always said "Jewish girls don't mow lawns." Of course, a) she tried to help my dad once and almost lost 2 of her fingers and b) that's been her excuse for many things she hasn't wanted to do.

  6. When I had a lawn, I had a electric mower - plug in and switch on. No problem.
I don't have a lawn now - I had my garden (think you call that a yard) gravelled and paved, because I simply couldn't cope with it (because of painful hip arthritis). But the damned weeds STILL grow through the gravel!

  7. Debra - so glad you agree- blood pressure soars and breathing becomes difficult as you open that email!
